Sylvester Stallion in one of his most famous roles , playing a nobody southpaw boxer from Philadelphia who gets a chance to fight the world heavy weight champion Apollo Creed. The ultimate underdog film , that's part sports film, drama and love story as Rocky seeks the heart of Adrian. When I was younger I used to prefer the second too this , with Rocky winning in that , but I think this is the better film because he doesn't win. I prefer the character of Rocky over that cartoon Rambo .

The Changeling. 1980.

George C. Scott is the music teacher who lost his wife and daughter in a accident, 4 months later he decides he needs a fresh start to teaching and rents a old manor house. When some unexpected occurrences happen he and Trish Van Dervere who works in the office that owns the house decide to look into the history.

This is one of these ghost story's that can be chilling without relying on practical effects of showing a ghost on screen and helps the viewers build up to the suspense and let them create the atmosphere. The seance part can be chilling until you hear the recording of what happened that can make the hairs stand on the back of your neck. The other chilling part, Scott disposes of his daughter's ball in a lake and goes home only to see the same ball dripping wet bouncing down the stairs with a creepy background score.

Although it is mostly centered around a house with a spook, director Peter Medak throws in a curve ball to a second story involving senator Melvyn Douglas and his connection to the property that doesn't get confusing just makes the plot even better. The cinematography is amazingly done as no one is running about daft trying to capture everything at once. Scott's acting is brilliant as the grieving father and husband who takes it upon himself to help the spirit that's trapped within the house and uncovering a few hidden secrets.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. 2007.

Another Tim Burton and Johnny Depp collaboration this time doing a musical with a extraordinary treat of a tale of vengeance and gore and some catchy singing. There are no screaming teenagers running from a lunatic, instead we get a somewhat British blend of satire, slapstick and dark black humor, even from Sacha Baron Cohen turning up as a Italian salesman then switching to his cockney voice.

Helena Bonham Carter may have been the questionable choice for Mrs Lovett but manages to pull off a decent part as the pie maker who has a heart when it comes to children and is able to show that she can sing. Burton's direction isd always great to see and adds in his tone of dark gothic, even in scene where it is bright he never changes the appearances of the characters. One film I eventually warmed up to after a few watches.

The Abyss. 1989.

After the success of The Terminator and Aliens, James Cameron wanted to make a tough film and he done it with this. Filmed in a unfinished nuclear power plant that took weeks to set up and problems during production with crew, props and even goats making their way onto set that chewed through wires, this wasn't a easy production.

This I have always found to be a great tense, claustrophobic film about a downed submarine and a crew of underwater workers getting hired to escort a navy SEAL team to go and find the wreckage and see what caused it to crash but also find something else under the sea bed. The acting is great even Ed Harris's character claiming to be calm then 3 seconds later belts out the loudest WHAT. Michael Biehn as the Seal LT. who ends up suffering cabin fever and basically trying to cause mayhem and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio who refuses to speak of the film does a good part as Harris's ex who joins the crew and everyone seems to hate.

Cameron creates a realistic environment that still feels otherworldly, populates it with real people and ratchets the tension to unnerving heights or depths. He was able to take a chance on using CGI effects that certainly paid off well. The cast were subjected to a lot of frustrating times and one or two near death experiences, Leo Burmester has said anytime someone complains about working on a bad movie his reply is always the same "F@~K You, I did The Abyss".
