I have always been under the impression the original series with Shatner and Nimoy leading the cast was little on the cheesy side with some wooden sets and acting to match. Is that unfair?
I've never seen The Original Series, ever! I watched TNG on Sky One back in the 90's, DS9 follows on from TNG and Voyager is a completely different storyline entirely.

Essentially it doesn't matter where you start, however the first 2 seasons of TNG aren't as good as the later seasons.

I don't have loads of free time and have many unwatched films and TV series on Blu-ray and DVD (including all of House) or Netflix/Amazon Instant requiring my attention, so I may just watch the first series of TNG and see what I think.

The Next Generation has dated worse than all the series. The original is definitely the best. Voyager is just meandering rubbish where they had to get a sexy Borg girl in to keep anyone watching. Deep Space 9 is good but is more Babylon-5 than Trek.

I'm one of those weirdos that prefers the 'monster of the week' format of shows. I've lost count of the the number of series i've loved in series 1, then lost interest in as the 'plot arc' kicks in. Fringe is one of those shows - loved the first series, 2nd was ok, 3rd meh. Warehouse 13, loved series 1 & 2, then meh. Arrow, series 1 great, 2 melodrama, 3rd not watched. Grimm too.

I have to admit, on rewatching I'm actually starting to like the first season most too, for precisely that reason.

That's interesting to read. I'll see what's available, have a look at some of the critical responses on Wikipedia and probably start with the oldest series!

If you do find the 60s series too dated/cheesy, I'd recommend at least starting with the original cast movies.

For the Southerners it's always had the documentary edge, or at least friends from down south told me at the time. Hoxton and the other trendy East End towns were like that.

Its getting like that in Manchester. I just want to know how to get one of those jobs that seems to pay a fortune and involves doing very little work or creating anything of value.
