No - back in the day, the certificates for UK films were 'U', 'A' (same as todays PG), 'AA' (you had to be over 14 to see one of these) and 'X' (same as an 18).

Legend has it that either Universal or Speilberg 'brought off' the BBFC so that Jaws, the "big summer film" of 1975 was given a lower certificate to ensure it would be a blockbuster

I have no idea in the truth behind this rumour, tho

Saw Jaws last night at Cineworld. Cracking stuff. That score, on a big digital cinema system, was incredible.

Watched Jaws at the cinema last night too and I totally agree about the Certificate. Me and my partner both reckoned it should be a 15, not a 12A. There are real shots of shark victims and corpses, floating decapitated head and leg, man getting eaten alive and loads of blood. How it could be a PG or 12 is beyond me really.

Anyway I digress and will admit that it's the first time I'd ever seen the film (Oh my god) so watching it for the first time in the cinema was one heck of an experience and I think I have to admit that it's the most terrifying film I've ever watched. That's obviously aided by the fact that I have a fear of Open Water and Sharks.

Watched Vampyr last night, from a childhood memory which terrified me, to this rather Kafkaesque film imo that deserved a better fate surely, like, say The Old Dark House, the crying shame that this is all we have left of the film.....still was worth the wait, and boy does del Toro love it . nice "visual essay" as well, also watched the Martino interview on ATCOTD, great stuff and boy is he modest

I am genuinely surprised that you think this.

It's seems perfect PG to me. It's a glorious fairytale with a bit of bite (pun intended) that would be a shame to deny youngsters. I can't think of anything in it that I wouldn't want my kids, nephews, nieces etc to see from 10 or so onwards.

Taking the middle ground between our views, it seems the BBFC were spot on picking a 12A.

Look at it from a historical perspective

Do you really think it should have been rated 'PG' (or 'A') back in 1975?

Blood, violence, language, brief nudity???

Don't get me wrong - I love the film, and I am very anti-censorship, but I do think that 'internal politics' played a major part in the certificate this movie got
