Attack of the Werewolves (2011)

The box proudly states "If you love Shaun of the Dead you'll love this!" Words that usually bring dread to this viewer's mind. However Attack of the Werewolves actually manages to pull it off. The comedy is of a simillar vein and mainly witty character banter rather than gross out humour, although one finger cutting scene is certainly gross and very funny, and it works because as in SOTD the characters actually appear to be friends and the banter seems real.

The Werewolves, being a Spanish production, are similar to the ones featured in the films of the great Paul Naschy, and are men in makeup who walk on two legs rather than abject CGI abominations and this adds to the films likeability to me. The plot about sacrificing young people to the creatures is almost secondary because none of the film would work had the characters and Werewolves not been believable. Thankfully they are and the film is a very entertaining nights viewing.

Eating Raoul - I've wanted to see this for eons, it always featured in my old horror books but I could never find it to see it.Well, first off, its not even remotely a horror film - more of a black sitcom/ satire - but it's got a don't give a shit, freewheeling feel about it that I enjoyed. Would make a great double bill with Frankenhooker - same unhinged disregard for film school rules, and NY attitude. Wish Criterion could have included the original transfer as the lurid saturated look of the trailer really suits the movie - sometimes rougher is better.

Met the director of this at grimmfest and he said himself the film was at least partly inspired by the naschy films.
