Also watched few episodes of Hammer House Of Horror. Eeh, they don't make 'em like they used to......
Great reviews Mr, Crat, I hope Summerisle is ...er... summer-y! Hired To Kill (Nico Masterakis, 1990) sounds like fun, I may have to find me a copy!

Death race 3 inferno, was ok ish for what it was worth, just at times it tried to be exciting with good action but kinda just come across as dull and boring, wasn't a patch on the first 2, but what kinda annoyed me was camera work etc it just kept flicking and jumping around from one clip to the next face , steering wheel, car, explosion, car, cheering , car , explosion, all in matter of mere seconds that you just didn't REALY get chance to actual see what going on half off the time.

I'm gonna have to get hold of the maniac remake at some point, heard nothing but good things from everyone here.
I recently got the blue underground 30th anniversary edition of the original and it's got a load of extras, its region free on dvd and is uncut ( the last time it was released in the U.K it was slightly cut).
So that's the way to go if you haven't seen it before Troggi, unless you own a region free blu ray player that is, (i should be so lucky ).
The originals got some great Tom Savini effects, a chilling central performance by Joe Spinell and Caroline Munro, so good stuff all round.
I'm really looking forward to seeing Elijah Wood's performance, i thought he was quite creepy in 'Sin City'.

The Maniac remake is by the far the best remake of the last decade (perhaps longer), and is the only remake that I'd say was on par with the original film.

As for the 1980 version, the Blue Underground BD is region free. The only Blue Underground BD which is locked (to my knowledge) is Django.

Watched 'Braindead' tonight. Haven't watched this for a while, really great film. It's amazing that this is the director of 'The lord of the rings' isn't it.
It's so bloody and pretty sick, but manages to get away with it because it's really entertaining, inventive and funny too.
I must say i like most of his films even 'Meet the feebles', ( The lovely bones is the worst in my opinion). i just wish he wouldn't drag his films out so much these days, the 'rings' films are great but just too long and i really like 'King Kong' but the same applies to that film.( i think losing at least half an hour to each of these films would be really beneficial).

With any luck they will account for locations and it won't all be done by green screens.
There's a bloke who lives locally to me who worked on the Star wars films, I cant remember if he was just a camera operator or DP. Anyway, he came into work and started complaining loudly how he'd seen all the films we stocked while at the skywalker ranch and on the coach with lucas while going around locations working on episode 2. He started telling me about how they were preparing to work on episode 3 and got a bit nonplussed when I asked if they could make this one 'a bit better'. He never came into store again.

Just finished watching 'Martyrs', must say that i thought it was very good.
I'd heard differing opinions of the film but tried not to hear too much about what actually happens in the film.
Heard it was very harsh and brutal, and it is, but i didn't feel at any time that it was exploitative or overly gratuitous.

It is hard to sit through at times, but the two main female performances raised it above the crowd for me,i thought they gave very good performances.

I generally dislike modern torture style horror films but this was centred around the effects of captivity on the victim and therefore had to have difficult scenes to make us aware of the impact it has on the victim and the villains of the piece are in no way glorified.
In the villains there is more reasoning and motivation than i expected which makes them seem even more chilling, they have a purpose. (even if it is pretty warped.) I will not go into detail but i did not expect this element.

The film was well made and quite creepy in a few of the earlier scenes, and i was impressed by the amount of dread the director created.
The plot takes a few twists that i did not expect and kept me gripped throughout.

I think a lot of the reason it has it's haters is that the film is very serious and doesn't try to just entertain us but provoke thought and it seems very realistic in its violence.
Not a film i can easily recommend because it is quite an ordeal at times, but i am glad i watched it. I'm sat here thinking about it now writing this and i can tell it's one of those films i'll be thinking about for a while ( this in my mind is a good thing.)
Hard to recommend but if your'e looking for something a bit challenging i would say go for it. 8/10
I didn't mind the extreme violence and know Mark Kermode said it was different from a 'torture porn' film because the torture and violence meant something.

But one of my favourite of the 'New French Extremity' films and one I've seen quite a few times. If you're interested, here's my review – Martyrs | Film 365

Agree to everything you said, I highly enjoyed meet the feebles, I detested the lovely bones pure rubbish dull and boring, my wife type of film and even she got bored quickly and turned it off, I don't see anything wrong with lord of the rings films, and King Kong being long because sometimes I enjoy a long epic film over some film that are short and could have been doing with being a bit longer. I suppose with lord of the rings he was doing the best he can to sticking to the original story and putting in as much as possible to the book.
