End of Watch which is a fantastic quasi found footage film about the relationship between two LA police officers. There is not an original idea in the script but somehow, perhaps the chemistry of the leads, it manages to seem fresh, exciting and above all enjoyable. I am kicking myself for not taking time to watch this when it played the local cinema.

The Hunt

Wow...

Thomas Vinterberg's films post FESTEN haven't bowled me over anywhere near as much as his contemporary's Lars Von Trier. I f*****g love Festen but after that he sort of went off the boil... Dear Wendy was pretty good and I enjoyed its all about love but none really knocked me sideways like Festen.

Until now.

This is a marvelous piece of film making all of you need to check out. It basically follows the disintegration of Mads Mikkelson's character's entire life after a wild allegation from a child snowballs out of control into a full blown scandal that turns an entire community against him. Part of the reason this works so well is Mikkelsons performance here is first rate and should really be considered oscar worthy. The other boon to the film is Vinterbergs assured direction that makes the whole thing incredibly gripping and deals with the subject matter in a mature way.

Please, Please, seek this film out! (though I bet most of you have already )

I have wanted to see this for a while and your words, along with its availability on Netflix, mean it'll be happening sooner rather than later.

It is a gripping, compelling and thought-provoking film in which Mads Mikkelsen gives one of the best performances of 2012.

I watched most of the Apu trilogy on film four this week. Missed a few sections because i wasn't organised enough. From what i saw they are a great group of films.
The first film was my favourite. Really takes you out of modern western life and transports you to another culture and way of living. I think i read Ravi shankar did some of the music, and for me it really enhanced the films. Great stuff, incredibly moving. I think i'm gonna have to get hold of these films in the future.
Film collection is a double edged sword, on one hand we all love picking up our favourite films but whenever we watch something new, if we enjoy it, it adds to the want list. aaaargh!!
A vicious cycle if ever there was one.

Hard Target

Feeling Tired, I decided against STALKER. The Hunt would be a hard act to follow so instead I decided to give this a whirl, as much to see what the quality is like on Blu-Ray as anything.

Hard Target remains my favorite Van Damme film by a long way. Produced by Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert, they took a fairly generic script that plays like a MOST DANGEROUS GAME knock off and brought over John Woo from Hong Kong who had been wowing audiences worldwide with films like Bullet in the Head, A better tomorrow 1 + 2, The Killer and Hard Boiled.

Hard Target is chock full of Woo trademarks like his dramatic use of slow motion and his well choreographed action scenes that make the film so damn entertaining. Unfortunately in typical Hollywood fashion it turns out that while the suits were interested in Woo's work they didn't really understand it and as a result the film was butchered by the ratings board for the awful R-rated cut that's frankly not worth watching. There is apparently a European release that contains it but if it costs even a penny more than the UK one don't bother as it's a waste of money.

The UK release has excellent picture quality and is 'uncut'. (theres always some controversy over extended and alternate scenes) and the action scenes are genuinely thrilling. Thanks to home video and the ability to go back and present the directors preferred cut films like Hard Target are given the opportunity for a second lease on life. This is a good thing as with great films like this they can finally gain the attention they deserve.

Hard Target was the 1st Van Damme film I watched and since then he as become a fave of mine

Wasn't a waste of money for me. I paid the extra so I didn't have to look at the vomit inducing UK cover.
