Why is it...sometimes you only need to look at a picture to know it's a made-for-television movie?

The font and style were fairly generic. One day I'd love to do a book on American TV movies of the 70's. There is some great material out there.

Satan's School for Girls. (1973)

A young girl is driving through southern California. Something has scared her real bad and she seems panicked. She makes her way to her sisters house and locks herself in. Unfortunately whatever it is that has scared her so bad has got in and when her sister Elizabeth, played by Pamela Franklin, discovers her hanging, apparently having committed suicide. Elizabeth refuses to believe her sister has killed herself so she enrols in her sisters school in Salem Massachusetts to find out what happened only to discover further suicides, and a group of witches called the five who worship satan!

Satan's school for Girls is a 1973 TV movie produced by Aaron spelling. It's relatively blood free. It's plot, dealing with a coven of witches operating from an all girls school pre-dates Suspiria (1977) and a sub plot about operant conditioning was later dealt with in greater detail by Strange behaviour. The film isn't one of the great classic TV movies but it does have a lot of the charm of 70's Tv movie of the week. It has some occasional interesting camera moves and shots and its tightly structured at under 80 minutes. It was memorable and popular enough to get remade back in 2000 with Shannen Doherty and Julie Benz. Its got a great cast, not only to we get Pamela Franklin but also Kate Jackson and Cheryl Ladd who would go on to star in Charlies Angels.

The Cheezy flicks disc looks ok. the print is real beat up and there's bugger all in the way of substantial extras but its worth checking out.
As i was reading this i thought the remade version was The Initiation of Sarah from 2006 starring Summer Glau and Morgan Fairchild as it sounds very familiar. It isn't however, so this is a pointless post really.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

What could have been an intelligent, funny comedy with an eye on relationships and how to get out of them gets totally lost early doors thanks to an over the top performance from the usually likable Kate Hudson, an actress i generally have a lot of time for, and a script that is too far fetched, bordering on ridiculous, even by comedy standards. It doesn't help that the two leads aside, no one from the cast is the least bit memorable either.

The films comedy set pieces are way off the mark and just seem silly, bordering on slapstick as Hudson attempts to drive Matthew McConaughey out of her life in ten days, by basically ruining his, all for a writing job at a fashion magazine. Meanwhile McConaughey, due to a business deal, has to keep hold of her for the same amount of time in order to prove he's good enough to run an ad campaign.

Seriously don't the script writers know if a girl wants to drive you away without actually dumping you, they ignore your calls and make up excuses not to see you, at least in my experience. Not buy you a hairless dog and a fluffy toilet seat cover.

Despite a promising opening twenty minutes the film ends up as an unrealistic, charmless missfire that is just about watchable.

Poltergeist (2015)

If you watch this film on its own merits, with the expectations of a PG-13 horror film it is actually quite decent for three reasons (stars);

1 star for the outstanding acting by the two younger children; it really makes you care for the fate of Maddie.

1 star for some quite inventive visual sequences among the generic jump scares (which tbh I thought there would more of) and quality cinematography throughout.

1 star for the quirky character of Carrigan, again played very well by Jared Harris, who is involved in some genuine moments of humour which never felt out of place.

3/5 stars.
