If we're talking Hitchcock, I was always a big fan of Frenzy. Noone seems to talk about that one within his body of work and that somewhat surprises me. Probably my second favourite of his films.

nekromantik 10th February 2013 12:24 AM

Tonight I saw:

Would You Rather, a rather generic "torture porn" flick starring Jeffrey Combs! Standard affair, girl gets offered to take part in a game where the winner gets lots of money and help for her sick dying brother. Then it gets to the usual torture scenes and starts to get bland. The twist on the usual story is pretty weak and apart from Combs its quite a boring movie.

The Ghoul, this is made by the same guys as The Girl Next Door and The Woman. They are a group to look out for! This movie is based on a book just like previous two flicks and has some pretty tough back storys involved including child abuse both sexual and physical. Thankfully you dont see much but it might be a hard watch for some people. Main part of the story is a urban legand of a monster called the ghoul who kills kids and girls start to go missing and guys end up dead and these 3 friends end up going on a adventure which ends with solving the mystery. Very good I thought and a good watch. Recommend viewing!

Hell yes, Ron Perlman is great in Cronos. Brilliant in Drive too...whatever happened to the deluxe BD of Drive Refn had planned?

I had a free day yesterday so I went overboard with my film watching! Only Legend was previously unseen!! Which takes the piss when my watch pile is huge and I'm rewatching stuff I've seen before

Any sonny chiba stuff is good. The streetfighter trilogy is usually the highest rated, golgo 13 is good an karate warriors is a must see, basically yojimbo with karate set in a desolate seaside town!

Female scorpion trilogy is good as well. In fact lm a big fan of a lot of what was considered b movies in japan.

Watched the first disc of salem's lot last night, still amazing especially when you think it was made for tv, for me I rate it higher than chainsaw massacre. Even after all these years of seeing it on tv I still get goosebumps at kid levitating outside the window wanting to be in, was unable to sleep for weeks the first time I saw it. Shall watch the last disc tonight.

Just started to watch what in my opinion is the greatest western ever made.

AMERICAN MARY - A medical school drop-out messes with the body modification underground. I had quite high expectations of 'American Mary'. Whilst it certainly ticked quite a few of my more favoured boxes thematically and cinematically, it wasn't quite the experience I was looking for. Perhaps I anticipated something a bit more 'full on'. But it is 'full on', in places, and contains some nice imagery, and, whilst there are some obvious reference points (Cronenberg, maybe David Lynch a little) I was even reminded of Peter Greenaway at one point(?) Above all, it was nice to watch something non-generic but still essentially 'horror' if you get my drift, a movie which takes itself and its themes seriously enough to play with ideas. Good, but I'll have to give it another go.

JASON X - I don't really like the Friday 13th series, but this is maybe an exception because of its care-free trashyness. As everyone probably knows, it's basically Jason, on a spaceship, murdering people. At one point he becomes a cyborg. What more can be said? It's mindless fun, contains the requisite amount of bloodshed and vileness and didn't really bore me.

HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER 2 - If ever a sequel seemed set up to fail it was this one. There's really no going back (or forward) from the black hole that is the original 'Henry', so I've made a point of avoiding Henry 2 over the years. This time, a spare £3 and my morbid curiosity and a total lack of anything better to do got the better of me. It's actually not that bad, and even stands up in its own right. It plays like a hybrid of dour blue collar drama and unrealistic nineties thriller, quite an uneven mix but, to me, an interesting one. It didn't quite sustain me, and after midway I felt the familiar tendrils of boredom begin to snake through my nervous system, but it certainly wasn't the disaster I was anticipating. Might give it another go due to alcoholic interference.

I wasn't keen on it when I first saw it in 1995 or '96, but watched it again the next morning and really liked it. Since then, I've seen it many more times and consider it Tim Burton's best film with Jonny Depp's finest performance.

In my opinion, The Searchers is the best Western ever made, with Once Upon a Time in the West a close second and Sergio Leone's best film.

This afternoon I had a look at Fitzcarraldo on German blu-ray. Unlike Nosferatu, here we get a straight English dub on the German release (no sub-titles). This is one of my all time top ten greatest films and it grows on me each time I see it. That the madness and genius depicted in the film were also part of the gruelling near two year shoot (see Herzog's diary of the making of the film) somehow making it even better. Quite brilliant.

The bluray also has the documentary Burden of Dreams in English.

JoshuaKaitlyn 10th February 2013 03:13 PM

Valentino (1977)
A biographical movie from Ken Russell about the silent star Rudolph Valentino. A little too episodic and it reminded me of a badly dubbed movie! I suspect that most of it was 'fiction'.

I want to pick that up. Aguirre too, but I'm a bit put out that the German soundtrack doesn't have English subs (although the English dub is available). I'm wondering whether to hold out longer.

Just watched Hellraiser for the first time in about 10 years, I bought the anchor bay blu ages ago and just never got around to it... Bloody hell it was awesome, I forgot how great it is, apart from the shoddy animated effects that come out of the puzzle box and drag the cenobites back to hell, I'm buzzing now, and I just picked up Hellbound: Hellraiser II from CEX so I'll watch that later this evening.

One of me fav horrors of the 80s! Heck of all time!
I only got first 5 on dvd and I hope to get them all on blu too! Only got 1st on blu so far.

Today I watched Argo. I loved it! Very good performance from the cast and a well made, interesting movie. Gotta give props to Ben Affleck for turning into a good director. I still need to check out The Town which I own but yet to watch.

Resident Evil Retribution.....Not the best in the series but not a bad film. I just wish they could stick with Alice being a normal person or a super human as to chop and change I feel is unnecessary.

I did pick up Aguirre whilst in the shop but put it back again for another day. To be honest, they probably don't warrant the upgrade from dvd to blu, but my DVD's are long gone. I hope they get round to releasing Even Dwarves started small, surely one of the most disturbing movies ever committed to celluloid.

Watched J. Edgar. A superbly made and informative biopic, much better than Spielberg's pedestrian and mawkish Lincoln. DiCaprio's Hoover is tortured, paranoid, repressed and megalomaniacal - a really captivating performance.

Fido (2006)

I picked this up as part of a US six film set primarily for the disc of Blood Diner, which, incidentally, was shite. I left Fido until next to last to watch as i had no hopes or real interest in it.

What a surprise this was, an absolute joy to watch and along with Dead Snow probably the best zombie film of the last ten years.

Fido manages to do what so many horror / comedy's fail and that is to produce a film that works on both levels to a high standard. The comedy on the whole is subtle rather than gross out gags. The script more or less follows on from the events of Romero's Night of the Living Dead, bringing us to a time when boffins have produced a collar that removes the zombie need to eat and makes them in effect servants, if a little dim witted. Fido, brilliantly played by Billy Connolly, is one such zombie who goes to live with the Robinson family and is instantly welcomed by the young son and wife (scrumptiously played by Carrie-Anne Moss) but not by Dad who fears them.

What we have from then on is essentially a "boy and his dog" movie as the two bond despite Fido eating his elderly neighbours arm ensuring another zombie upsurge and mum falling for the zombie rather than her uptight husband.

Its thanks to the excellent performances from all involved, a well crafted, fifties suburban American setting and above all, an energetic, carefully written script from people who know and love the zombie horror genre that Fido is a true delight for zombie fans.

The GF just showed me the trailer for Stoker. She really like's the look of it and thinks it's right up my ally. If I got the message from the trailer correctly, it's House on the Edge of the Park, with abuse, that promotes rape rather than condoning it...as an act of love that the main character take's to heart. You just know i'm going to love this right! Ethics aside the cinamatography at least looks interesting, might give it a shot when it comes out.

I was going to go see it no matter what it was about, being a Park Chan-wook horror/thriller is all I needed to know! So excited for it and from previews it looks like it will shock. :woot:

Slippery Jack 11th February 2013 10:58 AM

Which part of the trailer "promotes rape" . . .

Hawkmonger 11th February 2013 11:02 AM

No scene seen in the trailer, but am I the only one who got the feeling that that's where it's going with the uncle creepily talking to his sister, that her daughter is 'of age' and he wears a rape face throughout the rest of the trailer.
Not sure what to make of it TBH.

Wee catch up....
Hitchcock. For a film apparently based around the making of Psycho, the allusions to The Birds were beginning to piss me off some what, a slight film, and only twice did I really think that Hop captured Hitch. Agree with previous statements that for such a complex character, this was a bit frothy for my liking, something you couldn't say about...

Vile (2011). 9 strangers are trapped in a house, have to torture each other to release a chemical that the body produces in response to extreme shock. this makes it sound more interesting. It isn't. Crunch crunch goes the soundtrack, cliche cliche goes the dialogue, was bored within 30 minutes. Avoid.

showed mate Boss Nigger, he liked, I'm beginning to love this film.

Grapes of Death. Wheeeeeeeee, another Rollin film I like. Just a wee query, was one of the farmers in Kentucky Fried Movie???

Dark Star. Love this. "...and Boiler keeps punching me in the arm when no one's looking!!" Silly, but it's obvious that it was made with a real fondness for the genre...creepy and wacky at the same time, makes a great double bill with Silent Running imo.

A neglected (by me) classic. A young woman in a sleepy french town witnesses a stranger come into town, later he turns up at her house and rapes her. Later that evening she realises he's still there and ends up shooting him dead. Soon after another stranger turns up (played by CHARLES BONSON) and tells her he knows she killed the man, and he wants to know where the money he stole is. Of course she has no idea about any cash, and vehemently denies killing the man, what follows is a cat and mouse battle of wits betwen the protagonists.

A really well shot slow burner with a great plot and a fine performance from brosnan. I watched the shorter theatrical cut of the film so I could make it to my buddies in time to watch...

Seriously, you managed to misspell Charles Bronson not once, but twice. I'm on the phone right now to Chuck Norris telling him about this. He's not pleased. You know how these action heroes look out for each other.
