awe man i missed all this Alien convo today, bloody work.

Here's my 2 cents, having originally started this off with Event Horizon.

Alien: Ridley Scott's first and IMO the best of the 4 original films, is a testament to horror film making, He basically made a haunted house movie in space, tense, frightening and awesome.

Aliens: James Cameron takes the action movie approach to the franchise, creating the Colonial marines and making one of the most iconic of strong female characters in his inclusion of Ripley. Directors Cut is a must.

Alien 3: For me The Weakest of the 4, maybe due to Studio interference and a lot darker in tone and visuals. An early example of David Fincher's grungy dirty style. Still pretty good though.

Alien Resurrection: cleaner and more sparkly than 3, with an interesting idea about cloning and a group of space pirates. Although an american movie this is also very french. Great cast that includes the very very underrated Michael Wincott (The Crow) and Ron Perlman.

AVP: Although released as a 15, this is still quite an entertaining film, sure it's flawed but for entertainment purposes it does the job for me, extended cut is the better version.

AVP Requiem: WTF? all shot in the dark, barely able to make out what is going on, the only recognizable face is sexy michelle from 24 as a tough as nails marine. Utter drivel. that's what you get for letting Visual FX experts direct your franchise.

That's my opinion on the films.

It's kind of nice Ridley Scott is involved, I guess, but it's not like he's done much of any worth since the early 90s, so I wouldn't hold out much hope for an Alien quality experience.
Didn't you like Kingdom of Heaven? I thought that was brilliant (only the director's cut) and really rate Matchstick Men, Body of Lies and (Russell Crowe's dodgy accent aside) Robin Hood.

I recently rewatched AVP (extended) and while I sort of liked it on the first viewing,I didn't think much of it now...
I quit watching the sequel after 20 minutes...and never bothered with the 3rd one after having seen the trailer...

Maybe I'm not the target audience of this franchise?

Just finished watching Stand By Me on BD and it was absolutely stunning, a great leap in quality from what I was used to seeing in the good old VHS days. Still as wonderful and beautiful as I remember it, with a fantastic soundtrack to boot.
