I saw this in 1990 at Black Sunday in Manchester, I can not remember much about it but it was on with these other films. It was the first time I had attended a horror-fest of films over night and struggled stay awake. However it is aesthetically stunning and well acted, but perhaps the frenetic editing and dizzying direction is a little distracting!

The Curse (1987) Wesley Crusher grew up on a farm with his mum, sister, stepfather and stepbrother. Not sure where the farm was exactly but i'm guessing it must have been in Hazard County as Bo Duke turns up at the end to save the day. Anyway that's digressing. A meteor lands on Wesley's farm and soon begins infecting the local livestock and, unfortunately for Wesley, his mum as well, so much so that she gets a giant boil on her cheek that no one seems to notice for half the film. After an hour of farm chat and animal feeding, Wesley's mum starts to go mad and turns into an extra from Bava's Demons. Sensibly, stepdad just shuts her in the attic as that's what anyone would do as the world outside begins to mutate. Eventually Wesley flips when chickens peck his sister. Before long the house starts to crumble to the ground due to the meteor's influence until one of them Duke boys saves the day. Not long after, Wesley, who clearly now believes in little green men from outer space signed up for Starfleet academy, met his new mum Beverley and the rest is history. The Curse is pretty standard fayre. This sort of thing was done far better and more cohesively in the Creepshow segment The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill. So little happens once the meteor lands until the last 20 mins that a 25 min story would also have worked better here. Watchable yet instantly forgettable. What Films Have You Seen Recently? ImageUploadedByTapatalk1453156312.228665.jpg A rouge star is on a collision course with earth, the scientist of the world come up with two options to save the earth, changes its course or move the earth it might be 1/3 the size of the earth but it's mass is 6000 times greater so that only leaves the second option (which would course just a much damage) is to move the earth out of its orbit. So the world teams together to save the planet, another great Toho movie with some great effects, but we also have a unneeded and silly looking monster in the form of a giant walrus. 7.8/10 ImageUploadedByTapatalk1453156859.439671.jpg A silly but enjoyable Mexican scifi/horror about a witch/necromancer that is burnt alive but vows revenge on the Mexican inquisition that killed him, 300 hundred years later when the comet returns that saw in his death, he takes revenge as a brain eating monster on the descendants of the inquisition 6.5/10 ImageUploadedByTapatalk1453157110.816341.jpg A scientist is sent to a secret base that is working on the building of the worlds first space station to investigate the unexplained deaths of some of his follow scientist. 6.7/10 ImageUploadedByTapatalk1453157338.469316.jpg The third outing for Godzilla and this time his up against King Kong himself. Like most of Kaiju it's hugely enjoyable and it's fun to see these two legends go at it. 8/10 |
