A trip to the cinema today to watch Under the Skin and The Raid 2, both which are excellent movies in very different ways and both will be getting repeat viewings in the near future. If you thought the first Raid movie was brutal wait till you see the sequel in its uncut glory. |

Student Services A student pays her way through her first year at university by selling her 'services'. What was supposed to be a one off event, becomes her main source of income, becoming increasingly dangerous along the way. Explicit without being exploitative ( some of the more harrowing moments are mercifully off screen ) and features a great performance by Deborah Francois. Nine Guests For A Crime A group of friends visit an island where, in between getting off with each others wives, they face a mysterious killer from their past. A pretty minor latter day Giallo, this benefits from Camera Obscura's top class treatment. |

Go For Broke (1951) The story of Japanese-American soldiers who fought in Europe during World War II. Starring MGM war movie go to guy Van Johnson, Go For Broke isn't a bad film at all. Coming six years after the war, events portrayed here must have seemed very close to home at the time in this lively and well characterized Second World War film. The film treads the now well trodden line of training followed by combat, except back in 1951 this was probably quite a new way of telling war movies, however familiar it seems now. The film also looks at the thorny issue of racial prejudice as Johnson's lieutenant comes to terms with his platoon of Japanese-American soldiers and realizes they are as much a part of his United States as he himself. The race card is played smartly not allowing the viewer to take sides in the tensions. What was enjoyable about Go For Broke was it's lengthy battle scenes which were extremely well staged as well as accurate use of battle tactics and weaponry. My only real gripe doesn't concern the film itself but it's presentation. The film unfortunately went public domain in the seventies and this release from Shout Factory in their Timeless Military Movies 4 You set uses one of those prints rather than a cleaned up one. |

The transfer on this is immaculate! Raro have done a stunning job - not a trace of any of the problems that plagued NIGHTMARE CITY; no DNR issues, no grain issues, it looks superb! As for the film itself, I would struggle to call this a giallo, there are very few of the genre tropes made famous by Argento et al. This struck me to be very much a straight down the line poliziotteschi. It has violence as well as moments of levity but the central theme of slavery/prostitution rackets is quite dark and the heartbroken dad at the centre of the film (Raf Vallone) plays the role very well. Without giving too much away the end of the film called to mind the end of Lado's NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS . And the two cop protagonists (and the 70s vibe in general) kept reminding me of Thaw and Waterman from THE SWEENEY.

Embrace of the vampire Zzzzzzzzz. So slow and boring with channel 4 soft porn. Not much more to say 3/10. Captain Kronos Love this film it's just so much fun too watch with enjoyable characters. A joy to watch from beginng to end. One of hammers better films of that period. Don't know how true it was that if it had done better it would of been the start of a new series of films. 9/10 Deep red( not the vastly superior dario argento film) Interesting story let down by un interesting characters and poor direction. 5/10 Ghost in the machine Enjoyable film, with a twist on the usual serial killer plot. With have the killer the address book killer who ends up targeting Karen Allen and her son on the way to kill them he is involved in a accident and his soul ends up in electronic/ computer world and sets out to finish what he started. We have some interesting deaths espiacally the microwave death and some primitive CGI. 7.5/10 Next up mark of the devil which is my first viewing. Edit Giving up on mark of the devil couldn't get into it and the 70s porn music was getting on my nerves. Watching captain American in preperartion for seeing the the second film this weekend.
