Bog

A crustacean spin on the backwoods Bigfoot genre with all the usual hick characters bumbling about as the monster rampages through the trees. Cheap, cheerful and with an older age love story at its centre which was wildly out of place much like the lobster man creature in the woods. Fun if you like this kind of zero budget cash in.

Ha,ha.

Is this new or something you've dug up from the depths of the 70's?

Missing 411

Documentary looking at cases of people vanishing in American National Parks. Based on a series of books which I haven't read, this hints at otherworldly explanations but never commits. That said, it is very well made and oddly touching as families look for answers as to how their loved ones appeared to vanish into thin air mere seconds after last being seen.

Thought it might be. Lobster Man sort of tipped me in that direction.

Demon Wind

Blimey! No idea what the hell is going on in this one. Demons, nudity, slight of hand magic, lots of men wearing big earrings and a shit load of latex mask effects. Stuff happens, goo explodes all over the place and I was none the wiser by the end of it. Top stuff indeed.

Dream Stalker

A dead motocross rider returns from the grave, in his racing gear, to be with his living girlfriend...

Cheap and clanky zombie fun as racerboy kills off all those who are close to his beloved. Feature a bizarre rape scene as the dead and disfigured boyfriend, slips on a condom before saying "you can never be too carefull" only to utter "it broke" as he penetrates, leaving the viewer wondering if he is referring to the condom or his decaying dick.

Ancient Evil Unbound

Written and directed by Philip Gardiner, who also writes crap books on occult conspiracies, this feels like a vanity project that lucked out and got released. Filmed in murkovision, people walk around, do new agey rituals, get naked and walk around a bit more. Dire.

Death stop holocaust

Low budget Texas Chainsaw inspired horror/road movie with two girls coming a cropper with some masked blokes in a van. An ultra low budget flick from Justin Russell. It's shot like a grimy, grainy 70's exploitation flick. It doesn't quite work as well as it should but still worth catching if you get a chance. Its ruthlessly paced and throws a few nice curve-balls at its audience. Given that its an early low budget effort and shot in 2009 before everyone and their uncle were making their films look like this it's an interesting and ambitious little horror flick.

The Sleeper

While Death stop harked back to 70's rural horror. Justin Russell's follow up is very much rooted in the 80's slasher cycle. It follows a tried and tested formula of sorority girls on campus being targeted by a mysterious ruthless killer and pretty much sticks to the formula as much as possible incorporating nods to slasher flicks like Prom night and Black Christmas. By keeping things simple and no-nonsense Russell focuses on atmosphere and style and manages to make things feel very much like a film found on the shelves of a video store. Its a great little homage that's well crafted and has some nice kills. It's a real shame Russell isn't making more films these days as he's got talent.
