The Mother of tears.

A coffin and urn are dug up near a cemetery in rome. the urn is taken to a museam were it unleashes The Mother of tears and a bunch of evil statues that come to life and a baboon. ending up with Rome under siege by a army of witches.

This is the third time that i have sat through this dvd, and it doesnt get any better. quite frankly, it's terrible.
Asia argento is the worst actress ever and is so wooden that a tree couldn't have been much worse. and that's when you can even understand what she's rambling on about half the time. bring back Jessica Harper . then there's the witches, they had to be joking, right? a bunch of lame cackling goths who wouldn't frighten your average 5 year old.
Even the gore was a mess, which was so over the top that it was laughable, and didn't even look real half the time, especially the silly entrails scene that looked like it came from a Troma movie.

What happened to all the beauty and atmosphere that Dario had in Suspiria and Inferno? You definately wont find any of that in this film. His creative eye sadly disappeared after Opera, apart from a slight return to form with Sleepless, even if it was ultimately flat.

Lastly i would like to comment on the terrible actress who played the Mother of Tears, she is awful. and looks like a second rate porn star with a bad boob job , and her demise at the end is an absolute joke.

Dreadful. eventhough sometimes you get films that are so bad theyre good, like Bruno Matteis. but this is just bad. and even the score from Claudio Simonetti is very average too.
so this turkey is only getting 20 out of 100. and i'm being generous.

It's the devil attempting resurrection by growing body parts of himself on the villagers. It's going to look odd initially, hence th hopping about at the end as it's only managed to grow itself one leg. What did you expect, a fully formed devil like Baphomet? To me any humour goes out the window when the reality of the devil's reappearance comes to light.

Rider On The Rain(1970).

A mysterious stranger arrives off the bus in the south of France during the pouring rain and proceeds to stalk and rape a beautiful young girl called Mélancolie. Afterwards, she shoots him and disposes of the body. But then Charles Bronson appears playing the role of Harry Dobbs, looking for a bag of stolen money, and seeming to know all about what she's done.

Rene Clement directs this superb and intelligent atmospheric thriller with a superb and witty performance from Charles Bronson, showing that he far more than just an action film star. Marlène Jobert is also superb as Mélancolie playing cat and mouse with Bronson's character.

A top recommend with some nice twists. And featuring a good score as well. 8.5/10.

Doctor Detroit (1983)

Initially rather a foulmouthed wee thing. A bumbling academic is roped into shenanigans concerning some old lady's estate or something . Dan Akroyds his tits off. The cook from The Thing and Bobbi Fleckman lend a hand
James Brown turns up. Yeah, the eighties ....
A rather silly film. But not in a good way.

Her death actually comes across quite differently when viewed on a large cinema screen. It makes quite the impression. It's a moment that (unfortunately) has poorly translated to home viewing. btw Think you're a bit harsh considering the very low budget and very short shooting schedule. It's really not fair to compare it with the 'golden era' Argento period. Plus how often do you get to see a film that pretty much opens with a woman being strangled with her own intestines? I'd personally award 6.5/10, maybe even a 7/10 considering the cost of the film.

Don't Go To Sleep. A young family still grieving the death of their oldest daughter in a car crash moves to a new house, along with an ailing grandma. But hopes of a fresh start go downhill fast when the youngest daughter begins seeing manifestations of her dead sister - and she ain't there to play tag. Dennis Weaver, Ruth Gordon and the young lad who really didn't like clowns in Poltergeist star in this early 80s TV movie chiller that was a lot better than I expected it to be, and got a whole lot darker than I was expecting too. I rather enjoyed this, and the film also does a nice job of never quite defining whether the girl had become psychotically unhinged by the death of her older sister, or if there really was something more unnatural at work. Creepy stuff.

Widows

A very loose adaptation of the Lynda La Plante story directed by Steve McQueen. A bunch of crooks get blown away by the cops in a heist. The loot is blown up with them causing some problems when a local gangster aiming to enter public office turns out to be the one they robbed and he wants his money back. He decides to put the pressure on the ringleaders wife, played by Viola Davis who decides to get the other widows together and plan a heist.
The change of location to Chicago really works for the story. The political corruption at the heart of the film really adds to the story with non of the authority figures in the film being in any way respectable. So much so the widows decision to use their husbands final plan actually becomes plausible. The cast are all great. Viola Davis especially but it reminded me that Michelle Rodriguez is actually a pretty great actor when she's given good material to work with. Colin Farrell is also great, he's bringing his A game to this but then he's working alongside Robert Duvall so he'd have to wouldn't he.

Overlord

Dirty dozen meets Re-animator as a group of soldiers on a mission to destroy a German radio tower prior to the Allied invasion of Normandy uncover a disturbing Nazi experiment to create super soldiers from dead people.
Overlord is very daft, and the central character feels like someone who wandered into WW2 from the year 2018. Honestly though any criticisms I have of this are probably nit-picking because the film is so much goddamn fun! Its depiction of WW2 action is straight out of Action or any of the other war comics that used to be about back in the 70's and 80's. The horror when it comes is nicely blended in and it doesn't have that jarring sudden genre twist that might have occurred with lazier film makers. Even better the film is a solid 18 rated affair with some genuinely nasty moments including a scene with a meat hook that had me wincing. Honestly I really had a great time with this one. Worth giving a go, especially if your VUE is doing £4.99 tickets as the big screen really benefits this one.
