What Films Have You Seen Recently?

I'm ashamed to say that the last movie I saw was Dawn of the Dead - the original - for the very first time. It was fantastic and looked great on bluray. I haven't got round to watching the other cuts of the movie on the DVDs yet, so can anyone say which of the cuts of the movie they prefer, or are the cuts so similar that it's hard to tell the difference?

I also watched Escape from LA and Vampires which were both pretty poor by John Carpenter's standards. The effects in Escape from LA looked really terrible.

Lesbian Vampire Killers
This is not the worst film ever made as some would have you believe, but it is lazy film making lacking originality and style. I did chuckle a few times along the way, (Paul McGann's swearing priest was great.) but the whole thing just felt like an idea for a thirty minute comedy skit had been stretched out to make a 85 minute movie. I couldn't understand why the vampires' blood was replaced by white fluid duing their kills. If this was trying to cash in on the success of films like "Shaun Of The Dead" they should have realised that genuine gore is an important aspect.


The Perfect Getaway
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. For the most part this is well acted and the script is quite smart. There is a nice line of pitch black humour that runs through it too. The "twist" was no real big surprise and the ending fell a bit flat for me but on the whole this is a fine time filler with a few classy moments along the way.


Lady In A Cage
Surprsingly sadistic thriller which may lack gore but certainly has plenty of atmosphere. Olivia de Havilland plays a middle aged woman who gets stuck between floors of her nice well-to-do house while James Caan (This may be his first leading role?) plays the leader of a group of particularly nasty thugs who plan to rob the house. When they see the woman's predicament they decide to terrorise her for a while. This may be tame by todays standards but it must have been a real shocker for most back in 1964. (My understanding is that it was actually banned in the UK.) As a note of interest the opening credits are a real grabber.

watched The Jail by Bruno Mattei this morning and al;l i can say about it is it has everything. Both Jess Franco and Joe D'amato would be proud to have made this sleazefest

Very well filmed but also very boring and badly acted Swedish low budget horror film.

Think ya see Bruce's wee wee in that one! Still a decent underrated film inspite of this!

Mother of God! I just watched the uncut "Caligula". How did it make it through the BBFC? I'm heavily into 70s roughie porn at the moment and this film competes with the best of them. What next, an uncut UK release of "The Taming of Rebecca" or "The Devil Inside Her"?

I have just got back from doing the rehersal screening of The Expendables at work.

I went in really wanting to like it a lot. I mean how could it be bad with so many action greats. I came out thinking 'that was kind of ok'. For all of the action in the film there were still parts that seemed quite slow. I was couting the film reels though and notcied that by the middle of the film The Expendables still hadnt even decided if they were going to take the big mission yet.

The other major problem I had was the over use of shakey camera work and constant cutting. I really hate this type of action filming, for me it takes away from what is happening on screen. A good example here is the fight between Jet Lee and Dolph Lundren, for all I know it could have been an amazing show down between two action greats, but all I saw was the odd punch connecting a lots of shots of legs torsos and other close up body parts.

The end battle manages to pick the film up at the end (even if it is also hampered by poor camera work and editing). It's not quite up there with the violence of Rambos lastest outing but the set pieces are bigger and the explosions are fatter and Terry Cruise with his awsome shot gun shell firing machine gun was a sight to behold.

In the end as I sai before this film its just ok, it's not the ultimate action filmed as it was halied in the trailer, that title in my opinion is still held by Hard Boiled (or if you catch me on the right day, probably when I'm slightly anibrated Bad Boys II.
