The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

After finally seeing this online for a pittance i decided to take the plunge and possibly beacause i wasn't expecting much i found it to be mostly very enjoyable.

Yet another superhero origin story (yawn), this actually drew me in straight away with it's zippy storyline and crowd pleasing opening hour, helped by sparky dialogue and a very good cast - Andrew Garfield, Ged Bartlett, er', Martin Sheen, Rhys Ifans, Sally Field, the always watchable Dennis Leary and the lovely Emma Stone.

Garfield was fun as Peter Parker the high school nerd, and the early pre Spiderman scenes worked best as the first half of this 131 minute film played out as a teen high school comedy/drama. The film's problems came once Parker became Spiderman. Whilst the action sequences were fine they did feel a little speeded up, not really allowing the viewer to take in every kick, punch and web spin. The film's other problem was with Ifan's alter ego - the Lizard. It looked silly, too much like what it actually was, a CGI animation. I was never convinced i wasn't watching anything but a cartoon when it was onscreen.

As a Spiderman origin film i enjoyed it, it wasn't as good as the Tobey Maguire debut film but far better than either of it's sequels. I would recommend it to people, but seeing as you've all probably seen it well before i did there's not a lot of point.

I dunno, I'd sooner watch it than some of the recent overhyped crap that's out there.
Suppose the fact my boys love watching these types of film kinda makes me a fan by default

I have this collection too, mainly for Apaches and the other disturbing kids ed films, once seen at the optimum age they're never forgotten.
like so many films, once they've wormed their way into your memories you've gotta get 'em all. Bit like Pokemon and all that shite.
It's very much a product of its time - while it may not have the most logical story, it's incredibly ballsy and very well done; I cannot easily see anyone making anything comparable to this today. And the end message on the screen packs the biggest punch; it underlined the need for this to be made.

At some point, I'll get Vol 6 - Worth the Risk - do you have it by any chance?

Isn't it itself by definition 'recent overhyped crap', though?!

Apparently, vol 4 was a big hit and this is pretty much the sequel.

Edit - I've also got vol 1 - Police and Thieves; that was pretty good as well.
