X-Ray (1982)

Also known Hospital Massacre, X-Ray is, like Halloween 2, set entirely in a hospital where a killer is on the loose.

Directed by Boaz Davidson who i would think is now best known for producing action films, X-Ray is a slick pacy example of the slasher genre. The hospital setting allows for a heady build up of panic and hysteria as the lovely Barbi Benton (Yes she has a gratuitous nude scene) is stalked by a madman donning surgical robes. There are gorier examples of slashers out there but Davidson does well at generating suspense and then keeping it without allowing the film to sag once the killing spree begins.

Some of the characters are typical cliches as are some of the set pieces but Benton does well with a role that isn't that well defined. Although X-Ray has much to praise and i did enjoy it a lot at times i was left thinking that is just so unlikely to happen especially the general goings on of hospital life. To begin with it's corridors are poorly lit and the lack of doctors and nurses on the wards is ridiculous, that's just for starters. I could go on and reel errors off - at times it was that bad.

Never the less X-Ray is a fun example of the slasher genre although not quite a top tier performer.

Bits and pieces. He's 4 so the original Charlie Brown means nothing ti him. He was getting bored by the halfway mark. It was very inconsistent with a barely there plot that served to do little other than tie together a bunch of random bits involving Snoopy flying a plane.

I have only read one review (which gave it 3/5) and the reviewer enjoyed it, but said there was far too much of The Red Baron and Snoopy's flights of fancy.

There was. Made no sense to me at all. My boy enjoyed those bits. I does seem to carry the feel of the old Charlie Brown with the grating stupid annoying characters. Which probably explains why i didn't like it.

Is Miller's Crossing the Coen's best film ? I think so.

Gloriously shot, wonderful score and a script as sharp as a razor. A lot funnier than I remember, I feel like watching it again.

Saw A View to a Kill last night, first time in a very long time. Roger Moore is back for his 7th and final outing as 007, as Bond goes up against a mad industrialist (Christopher Walken on great scenery-chewing form) who wants to corner the market on microchips and doesn't much care about killing millions of people by wiping out Silicon Valley to do it. What a loony. I really enjoyed this, a massive return to form after the fricking boring Octopussy (the only Moore I don't like) with solid support from Grace Jones as Walken's menacingly murderous henchwoman and the late, great Patrick Macnee stealing every scene he's in as Sir Godfrey. The chemistry between him and Moore when they go undercover on Walken's estate is great and it's a real pity he gets killed off so early. Tanya Roberts is a pretty lame Bond girl (though that's as much the script's fault as hers, as she only really shows up over an hour in and gets little to do, rather a disappointment after the Russian spy in - er - Spy, Holly Goodhead (lol) in Moonraker and the vengeful Melina in FYEO) but the movie has so many other pleasures to offer it doesn't bother me too much. There's loads of great action scenes and a thrilling last half hour, complete with memorable climax atop the Golden Gate Bridge.
Huge fun and a great send-off for Uncle Rog.

What do people think about going to the flicks on your own ?

I want to watch Star Wars, my missus would rather go through childbirth again, the two girls just laugh and walk off, my fifteen year boy will have a massive hangover and I'll deal with that little shit at another time. There's a showing at 10.45, pretty sure I can skulk off.

I've done it loads of times. Always during the day though. Never at night.
