A Dark Song A grieving mother hires an occultist to conduct a ritual to contact an angel... This is a very impressive film featuring 2 cast members in an isolated house in the country completing a 6 month magickial working to invoke an angel. Both are deeply flawed individuals, one by grief and the other by life in general . Although the rituals are made up, the long scenes of ritual work, prayer and cleansing are the real deal where this type of magic is concerned. As impressive as these scenes are, the films real strength is the balance of power between the occultist and woman, and what an individual is willing to do to get what they think they need. The ending is very powerful and cathartic. This is the first genuine occult film I have seen that shows the sheer hard graft involved in magical workings of the grimoires. As a mark of how good it is a war of words has broken out about it on social media between some very respected occult authors. Highly recommended as both an instant occult classic but also a very human story. |

[QUOTE=trebor8273;532492]The Gate. Enjoyable bit of late 80s comedy horror. Even though aimed at kids its quite creepy in places and has a sliight Spielberg vibe.[\QUOTE] I'll see your The Gate and raise you with another 80's comedy horror: The Monster Squad. A film I've loved since it first came out on VHS, tonight's viewing was a first for my other half and stepdaughters, not sure they enjoyed it as much as me and the youngest, who's nearly 7 said she's gonna get in with us if she has nightmares and it's all my fault This film needs a UK release!

The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) I just can't get into this film that much. It comes over like a poor mans Theatre of Blood (1973) minus the wicked streak of sadism. It doesn't help that Vincent Price is both expressionless and often silent throughout, although i must mention the skeletal Phibes at the climax as the films highpoint. What should have been fine campy fun seems as lifeless as Vulnavia and even a surfeit of guest stars can't save it. Still i liked it better than the last four times i watched it and didn't become bored, so things are looking up and i won't be getting rid of the film this time. My fourth dvd of it and this time it's a keeper. |

Very atmospheric if not particularly scary, shooting it in black and white adds to the atmosphere but the acting is a litte on the hammy side and the character of Elenore is annoying but still a fine example of a haunted house movie and has bags more atmosphere than those films that just rely on gore and cheap shocks. 8.5/10 Next up the granddaddy of giant monster movies King Kong. |
