At the moment I'm at work with feet up on the desk watching The Godfather part 2. First time I ever saw these movies was 3 years ago. Everyone use to rave about these movies I know now why. Al Pacino portrayal as Michael Corleone is amazing.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2

I suspect with this one I'll be reading a lot of reviews with the well worn "difficult second album" cliche. Its certainly not as good as the first, mainly because the first Guardians set the bar quite high. However its not an Iron man 2 or Thor dark world (and I still like these well enough but its hard to deny they dipped in quality somewhat.) The main complaint is there is some humour that falls flat, that said some of it had me and most of the audience in stitches. However it certainly could be argued to be a little hit and miss. The other complaint, which to some people might actually end up being a positive, is that the plot is a little light and it minimises references to the extended MCU. The film is essentially a character building exercise. The first film was the team coming together, here they get to develop somewhat and bond. The smaller character centred story is probably going to be a bonus to anyone who could care less about the other Marvel films.
Overall its still a solid film, the final act is genuinely tear jerking and gives one of the characters a great send off that feels genuinely well thought out. Also we get David Hasselhoff so bonus!

My mate showed me Dead Man last night.
Well written black and white western, the story is about a man named William Blake (played brilliantly here by Johnny Depp), who goes to a town for a job, he arrives and is told the position has been taken, he is about to leave when he shacks up and sleeps with a girl, her boyfriend returns and he kills his girl to which blake murders him and then escapes.
This is by far one of my favorite performances by Depp, the soundtrack is amazing and makes this film so much better. Also praise to the support cast consisting of the likes of Robert Mitchum, Iggy Pop, John Hurt, Gabriel Byrne, Billy Bob Thornton and Lance Henrikson.
9/10

Split Second (1992)

A fantastic sci-fi / horror/ buddy cop movie mash up starring Rutger Hauer as a maverick cop and Neil Duncan as his new partner, a serial killer specialist. The two are assigned to track down a killer whose mutilated victims are left with their hearts ripped out.

The setting - a futuristic London plagued by high flood waters and rats is a revelation and the direction captures the eerie ambiance of a rapidly deteriorating city populated by grotesque characters perfectly.

Hauer is on top form when he settles down from thinking he should be playing Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon, as the cop who lives on strong coffee and chocolate and just barely tolerates everyone including his new partner. As it becomes apparent the killer probably isn't human the pace and thrills pick up considerably with some excellent action set pieces as the film thunders towards a gripping climax.

Split Second is one of those rare films that adds something to a well worn genre.

Thanks to Inspector Abberline for recommending this to me last year. Nice one!

You have the Shout Factory Blu, treb?

If so, I thought it looked really good. It was actually one of the first Blus I bought along with Forbidden World, Humanoids from the Deep and Piranha all under the 'Roger Corman's Cult Classics' banner.

I later added Starcrash and the 'Women in Cages' triple feature. I need to pick up Death Race 2000 at some point.
