Cube (1997) a group of people wake up in a Cube room with 6 doors, no one knows who each other are and no one knows why they are placed there, they all agree on one thing: to get the hell out. however as they try to escape they realise that some of these rooms are rigged with traps (flamethrowers, spikes, sharp wire, acid spray). As sci fi movies go, this is a very interesting premise, the characters at times seem to be rather plain, the effects are so dated it is laughable and (whether it's a good or a bad thing) you could argue that this is another influence to the torture porn subgenre. but despite all this it is a decent enough sci fi flick with an intriguing premise. 6/10 Slither (2006) James Gunn's first film. The story is about a local man drunk in the forest finds a strange creature and is infected with an alien parasite, the parasite loves raw meat and kidnaps a woman to impregnate her with parasites, she then feels hungry so he feeds her, the cops find her and she bursts full of parasites which infects the local town and it's up to the local sherriff, the infected mans wife and a young girl whose family is infected. This is a great laugh, the acting is good and the dialogue has a great sense of humor. Some of the CG is off but, there is some good physical effects. Also has a good cast consisting of Nathan Fillion and Michael Rooker as well as cameos from James Gunn and Lloyd Kauffman. 9/10 Legend (1985) The Prince of Darkness wants to destroy daylight for good, the only way to do this is to kill 2 unicorns. He sends a group of goblins to kill them and claim the horn. They successfully claim the horn of 1 and kidnap the other for sacrifice. It's up to Jack and a ragtag group to save the unicorn (oh and also the princess). While the plot is more or less basic and the characters are above average. what this film has is amazing Visuals (no joke it looks stunning on blu ray), great music and Tim Curry as the Prince of Darkness is amazing and looks like a badass. 8/10

Midnight Man(1974) Recently paroled ex-police detective (Burt Lancaster) gets a job as campus night watchman and tries to solve a coed's murder. Its effective and engaging thanks in large part to Lancaster. Solid and lively supporting cast. The problems I have with this is the direction(co-director Lancaster) is somewhat uneven and pacing lacks the intensity suspense one would see in many films Lancaster is in. I'd give this 6.5/10. On a side note Burt's son Bill appeared in this as well. It was a nice surprise. |

The Beacon (2009) While trying to get their lives back on track after the loss of their four-year-old son, Bryn and Paul Shaw move to the charming old Beacon Apartments. Bryn begins seeing a ghostly little boy skulking around the building. With the help of an eccentric young professor who works with Paul, Bryn tries to uncover the details of the boy's death and in turn bring some closure to her own personal tragedy. What initially drew me to the film was it's two stars - Teri Polo as Bryn Shaw and David Rees Snell as Paul. Both are excellent character actors as typified with their long running performances in The West Wing (Polo) and The Shield (Rees Snell). I suppose the two carried the film in the first half as the plot took it's time to get into full stride. Instead introducing us to the Beacon apartments and the assortment of characters residing there including the sultry Elaine Hendrix as a down n' out actress currently making a living as a website dominatrix and Michael Ironside as a local beat cop. As the central story takes control there are a few twists and turns, especially at the finale, but it never becomes convoluted nor does the film rely on jump scares or gore as it slowly gets under your finger nails and grabs the attention. It's not a teen style movie, it's for adults and played by adults with an over whelming sense of melancholia throughout and for those that stick with it the pay off is very nicely done. As the end credits rolled it was clear the film makers were influenced by The Sentinel (1977) and Don't Look Now (1973). Two superior films to this, however for those that like well made modern ghost stories The Beacon may just be up your street. I for one enjoyed it! The UK dvd goes under the name of The Wrong Apartment. |
